Saves The Day - At Your Funeral

At Your Funeral is the opening track from Saves The Day's third album Stay What You Are. It is probably their most popular track and was played tones on mtv2 back in the early 00's. Due to it being played so much I haven't listened to it for years, but the singer was recently on a Podcast I listen to discussing the song and hearing it brought back all kinds of memories.

The song was written after the singer as a young man went to hang out with a band he really respected at practice and all they did was drink and smoke, so he ended up being disappointed with the experience and saw this as the end of that relationship and having those guys on a pedestal and therefore wrote this song on the back of this.

It is the typical pop punk 3 barre chord track but they do so much to make it a great track.

Covert Flops - Spy School Dropout

Covert Flops are an Indiana 3 piece (Chad (guitar vox), Adam (drums), Billy (Bass vox)) and if you like The Lillingtons, Ramones, Queers etc then you'll like these guys. Titled Mission: Implausible, they have released a new album and it is more of what you'd expect from them. They're still singing about spies and they're still influenced by The Ramones and The Lillingtons' The Backchannel Broadcast album. They're still lots of fun. The album's available via Mon's Basement Records

This track is called Spy School Dropout...

Teenage Bigfoot - The CIA Killed Bill Hicks

Teenage Bigfoot are a trio from Philadelphia featuring Tiffany Tavella (bass/vocals), Joe Gdowik (guitar/vocals) & Jake Wunderlich (drums). They've been plying their fun, 90's pop punk influenced wares since 2013 and have built up a solid back catalogue of music. Their latest release is a new album titled Weapons Against Darkness and it's pretty damn impressive.

Pop punk influenced it may be but it's the powerful, punchy brand of pop punk, not the anodyne kind. It's pacy, bounce around party music for punks who want to go to a show and get all sweaty.

It's available now on Bloated Kat Records as a name your price download.

This is a highlight, it's titled The CIA Killed Bill Hicks...

Fine And Great - Stole The Liquor

Fine And Great are a three piece from Munich, Germany, featuring three friends who have played in different bands of varying genres for years. In 2019 they decided to get together for a new band to share their combined love of emotionally charged pop punk music. Early in 2020 they released their first single Three Sheets To The Wind before lockdown happened and put a bit of a halt to everything. Not deterred, the band managed to write and record their first EP, the appropriately titled How To Survive By Getting By which was then released in July 2021 on Midsummer Records.

I am sharing the penultimate song on the EP which is titled Stole The Liquor. Fine And Great also released this track as a single before How To Survive By Getting By came out. This was a great choice as it really encapsulates what Fine And Great are all about. The song is packed with builds, great vocals, harmonies and beautiful story telling. There’s a moment in the song where Manu lets out a shout that you would most likely expect from his other band, Captain Asshole. It’s a rare moment on the EP that really showcases the pain in his voice.

Pep Talk - Sleepwalk Girl

Following on from Tuesday's Capgun Heroes track, we have another one from Hey Pizza Records today.

Pep Talk are from New York and line up with Rocky, Rookie, Guli, Azeem & Grivet who are also members of The Young Rochelles, New Rochelles, Sketchy and Weird Skin (and have previously been in the likes of The Steinways, House Boat, Isotopes etc...).

Last month they released an ep titled Next To Me which was a teaser for their upcoming album. Titled Live, Laugh, Lobotomy, that album is out now on various coloured vinyl, cd and digital download.

The album is a mighty fine debut, 14 tracks of upbeat Ramones influenced pop punk with hooks aplenty. They've just released a video for Sleepwalk Girl so that is what I am sharing today.

Capgun Heroes - That Girl

Capgun Heroes (Joe Capgun (vocals), Matt Cappy (guitar), Andy Hero (guitar), Nick Hero (guitar), Jimmy C. (bass), and Scotty (drums) are a Chicago based punk band who have recently released a debut LP that is a great first release.

From flat out scorchers like "Lobotomy", the obvious hit song "That Girl" and a Remone cover with  "Do You Wanna Dance you get some Melodic type songs, some Street Punk type songs and the catchy as Hell Pop Punk songs.

The album is called Last Call For Adderall and it's available on coloured vinyl & cd from Hey Pizza Records and is available digitally via their Bandcamp page.

This is That Girl.

The Bollweevils - Black Hole in My Mind

The Bollweevils come from from Chicago, Illinois and they are a band I probably became aware of through Off With Their Heads. They have been around since 1989 and have racked up a pretty impressive back catalogue of songs that could be tagged as pop punk but skirt nearer the punk end of the spectrum than the pop end.

In line with playing at Riot Fest and The Fest in the near future, they've also released a new single. It's titled Liniment And Tonic, it's their first new material for 6 years and it's available via Red Scare Industries.

Whilst the title track is an ode to Daryl's day job, the flip makes a very decent fist of covering a classic from Death By Television by The Lillingtons. This is Black Hole In My Mind...

Mystery Girl - Dialtones

Mystery Girl are a power pop/punk quartet from Albany, New York and line up with Thomas Race (guitar/vocals), August Spataro (guitar/vocals), Eric Pressman (bass) & Dan Crampton (drums).

They've just released a debut Self Titled album, limited to 300 copies on vinyl and available from No Front Teeth Records (UK) & Boulevard Trash (US). Pitched at fans of The Undertones, Dead Boys, Exploding Hearts etc, it's 11 tracks of catchy pop and roll tunes that will worm their way into your consciousness.

A definite highlight from the album and one they released a video for, this is an upbeat burst of infectious energy called Dialtones...

Be Fair - Cero Deniro

For me, nothing beats stumbling across and then sharing something by a new band that you know nothing about but who sound very promising.

Be Fair are a Sheffield/Leeds based outfit, delivering, catchy, fast-paced, no-nonsense punk and they've just uploaded a debut 5 track demo to Bandcamp. It's self recorded and they admit it's a bit rough but it sounds pretty damn good to me. Titled But can we do it on a wet Tuesday night in Stoke? it's name your price over on Bandcamp.

It reminds me of many bands I have seen over the years in venues such as Joseph's Well and the like and it takes me straight back there.

All 5 tracks are worthy of your attention, good old school shouty UK punk with the odd gang chorus, I look forward to hearing more.

Cero Deniro is the opening track which in Spanish it means zero money and is a dive bar singalong.

The Linda Lindas - Oh!

The Linda Lindas are currently one of the most talked about new bands around and also one of the youngest. Based in Los Angeles they're two sisters, a cousin, and their close friend; 10 year old Mila, Eloise (13), Lucia (14) & Bela (16). Two of them are Asian, two Latinx and they mix up the spirit of punk rock with a healthy dose of both power pop and new wave. They took their name from a 1987 song by Japanese punks The Blue Hearts

Signing to Epitaph hasn't done them any harm you wouldn't have thought. This is Oh!

The Hum Hums - Dee Dee Girl

The Hum Hums are a Tokyo based pop punk/power pop band who for over a decade now they've been releasing some of the catchiest tunes around. Their influences range all the way through from Stiff Little Fingers to Herman's Hermits via the likes of Jan And Dean.

They're pretty much ready to record a new record but the restrictions caused by the pandemic have left the coffers somewhat bare so to raise funds they recently put out a couple of stop gap releases full of previously unreleased stuff. There's Teenage Loser Outtakes (7 outtakes during the pre production for "Teenage Loser" back in 2012 including an unreleased song) and even more interestingly Rejected Demos 2013-2021 (10 rejected demos in 8 years including 2 cover songs).

Perfect music for driving in your car on a sunny day or maybe lying on a golden beach watching the surfers.

This track is about the one and only Dee Dee Girl...

Real Sickies are from Edmonton, Alberta and boast some great catchy choruses and melodies galore.

Titled Love Is For Lovers, their new album is out on July 9th on and will feature "a stellar collection of 14 timeless songs about love (duh), loss and heartache served up as only the Sickies can. From explosive rockers to heart-wrenching ballads, Love is for Lovers has the whole enchilada!". Today I am sharing the title track. This is Love Is For Lovers...

Gatuplan - Punkhjärta

Veteran punk rock bass player Inge Johansson (known from bands such as The (international) Noise Conspiracy, Against Me!, CSS, Cryssis and Stilett) releases his first solo album under the name Gatuplan on Sound Pollution/Wild Kingdom. The name Gatuplan means Street Level and the album title KAMPEN GÅR VIDARE! Translates to The Struggle Continues. Gatuplan's music is rooted in old school punk rock, mixed with all the influences that comes from Inge's lifetime as a fan of music and a life on the road. Inge explains "When I started writing songs for Gatuplan the idea was to make music with the melodies and emotions of Ramones, the attitude of Rancid, a way of delivering vocals and lyrics like Mike Skinner of The Streets, a danceable world music/ska groove taken from bands like Mano Negra and The Specials and the approach to politics like Public Enemy. I wanted to write music that would work in a club vibe, but also as the soundtrack to a protest. And even though I'm singing in Swedish, I wanted to make sure that the songs were simple and catchy enough to break language barriers."

I am going with the track Punkhjärta.

Randells - Karen (feat Valentina De Rosa)

After dropping 4 teaser tracks over the last few months Sweden's Kings of Beach Pop Punk the Randells have released their Magnum Opus - The perfectly titled "Kicks". Besides the 4 tracks we've already heard there are 8 brand new bangers ranging from solid Punk tunes to their patented harmony filled Beach Pop gems. "Pick Me Up", "Cheese", "Elvis In A UFO" and the closer "End Of The Summer" are all classic Randells feel good tunes. There's a couple Punk jams to keep you boppin' including the new video/song "I Don't Wanna Go" featuring guest vocals from Mr. Beef Bonanza from The Bones. This is gonna be my soundtrack for the Summer of 2021 and probably many Summer's to come.

Geoff Palmer - Many More Drugs

Geoff Palmer is musician and songwriter. Best known as a founding member and songwriter for the veteran garage rock/power pop band The Connection. He has a way with his song writing and vocals that are easily recognizable and transcends throughout his many projects. His latest single is right in his wheelhouse of catchiness, sincerity, fun and the love and adventure of the music he loves.

There's even a tribute to the mighty Dickies within
Many More Drugs. This is a story of a teenage Palmer desperately searching for The Dickies song ‘Manny Moe And Jack’, which he fell in love with but misheard the lyrics of! It's called Many More Drugs...

Martha - Mini Was a Preteen Arsonist

Another track from Pity Me's Martha today. I didn't know the background of this track until recently when "Inside Story: Mini" came up as part of "Louis Theroux: Docs That Made Me, a collection of Louis favourite documentaries". It is a documentary about an 11-year-old serial arsonist that shocked millions across the UK in 1975. Michael 'Mini' Cooper had already torched a church and set his family home ablaze, knowing his father to be inside. The film follows the angelic looking Mini in a young offenders home in County Durham, as social workers and psychiatrists quiz and probe the charismatic and intelligent tearaway to determine his future. It is fascinating. He is one of those children that speaks like an adult. It's an incredible story that is well worth your time. It is up on iPlayer if you want to check it out. This is Mini Was a Preteen Arsonist.
