Pep Talk - Sleepwalk Girl

Following on from Tuesday's Capgun Heroes track, we have another one from Hey Pizza Records today.

Pep Talk are from New York and line up with Rocky, Rookie, Guli, Azeem & Grivet who are also members of The Young Rochelles, New Rochelles, Sketchy and Weird Skin (and have previously been in the likes of The Steinways, House Boat, Isotopes etc...).

Last month they released an ep titled Next To Me which was a teaser for their upcoming album. Titled Live, Laugh, Lobotomy, that album is out now on various coloured vinyl, cd and digital download.

The album is a mighty fine debut, 14 tracks of upbeat Ramones influenced pop punk with hooks aplenty. They've just released a video for Sleepwalk Girl so that is what I am sharing today.

The Nilz - Ginger Jesus

The Nilz are from Dublin and have a new album in the pipeline. It's going to be called Unicorn Hardsports and on the evidence presented from this teaser track, it's going to be somewhat of a banger.

The new song is a rip snorter and is accompanied by a video that comes with a graphic content warning. It's called Ginger Jesus...

Capgun Heroes - That Girl

Capgun Heroes (Joe Capgun (vocals), Matt Cappy (guitar), Andy Hero (guitar), Nick Hero (guitar), Jimmy C. (bass), and Scotty (drums) are a Chicago based punk band who have recently released a debut LP that is a great first release.

From flat out scorchers like "Lobotomy", the obvious hit song "That Girl" and a Remone cover with  "Do You Wanna Dance you get some Melodic type songs, some Street Punk type songs and the catchy as Hell Pop Punk songs.

The album is called Last Call For Adderall and it's available on coloured vinyl & cd from Hey Pizza Records and is available digitally via their Bandcamp page.

This is That Girl.

Be Like Max - Home Away From Home

Be Like Max is a ska/punk collective from Las Vegas, Nevada who has been endlessly touring the United States since their inception in 2010.

Their latest album Save Us All came out in 2019 and I am sharing the track Home Away from Home today.

OC Rippers - Eyes Of Satan

OC Rippers are from Beachwood, New Jersey and earlier this year released a very fine album called Wasteland Blues. They are back with 3 more tracks of energetic, sleazy punk n roll in the form of the Born To Fuck (Fall '21 Demo) and as with the album, it's an excellent listen.

The EP includes Eyes Of Satan which was originally released by Cleveland, Ohio punk legends The Pagans. It's not always easy to do justice to a song by what many people consider to be one of the classic bands in the genre but OC Rippers knock it out of the park, in my opinion at least.

Slalom D - Images Of Joy

Last November I posted Final Girl by Sunderland 4 piece Slalom D. Titled Final Girl, it was about survival and hanging on in there and I'm pleased that it's managed to hang on in there and reappear on the band's new album.

The album is called Happy Skies and I'm pleased to report that there's plenty of other songs on it that are as good. Unlike many a punk album, most of the tracks run past the 3 minute mark but as a testament to how good they are, none seem overlong. It's an enjoyable and consistent listen with highlights aplenty. You can contact the band on Facebook if you want a cd or visit Bandcamp for the digital version.

I'm going with Images Of Joy this time around.

The Prostitutes - Headcase

The Prostitutes have been around for 26 years now, fronted by the ever present Kevin McGovern. The other members may change, as may the band's location, but the music remains kick ass punk rock.

Their latest track is a 1 minute adrenalin rush that Kevin describes as both experimental and abrasive. Titled Headcase, you can find it as a name your price download on Bandcamp.

Wet Leg - Chaise Longue

Wet Leg are Rhian Teasdale and Hester Chambers, they're from the Isle Of Wight and they've the potential to be massive. They're fun, they're probably filthy (unless they only actually want muffins buttering!) and they do it all with a knowing look and an aura of immense coolness.

Obviously, with this being their debut single it could be a fluke and these heights may never be reached again. But I'm hopeful that won't be the case.

This is Chaise Longue...

Travis Cut - Protest And Politics

Travis Cut are a London trio who were much beloved of the great John Peel and who're much missed on the UK punk scene.

19 years after calling it a day, they are releasing tracks from the first session for their 4th album that took place 19 years ago. That album never happened so instead, nearly 2 decades later; these songs are finally seeing the light of day with their own vinyl release.

The ep is titled In Transit and it's available now from Brassneck Records. All 3 tracks are great but I am going with Protest And Politics. It really does make you think about what could have been if they released that 4th album...

Enola Gay - Salt

In July last year I featured the debut single by Belfast post-punk/shoegaze/noise quartet Enola Gay. It was a very impressive calling card, a pummelling soundtrack accompanied by well thought out and topical lyrics about racism.

This year they've continued to impress with a clutch of intelligent, razor sharp tracks. As well as releasing music (and getting plenty of airplay on BBC Radio 6 Music etc), they've been (and will be) busy playing live so check out their Facebook page for gigs.

Their latest song is a political treatise dealing with media manipulation and "promised fables." This is Salt...

Mini Skirt - DIY Nightmare

Mini Skirt are a punk band from Byron Bay in Australia. They recently released a split 7" with Sydney based C.O.F.F.I.N.

Today I am sharing the Mini Skirt track DIY Nightmare. It reminds me of powerful 80's UK anarchic post punk, it's naggingly addictive and hope you think so too.

Face To Face - A Miss Is as Good as a Mile

Face To Face have been in the game for thirty years now, and despite having a strong fan base, they have not had the name recognition of some of their punk contemporaries, like NOFX, Lagwagon and Strung Out, which considering their sound is very West Coast punk is a damn shame, and No Way Out But Through encapsulates this perfectly.

A Miss Is as Good as a Mile is a highlight and has one of their classic big poppy choruses, dynamic drum beat continues the overarching theme of empowering and inspiring others. Scott Shiflett, brother of Foo Fighter Chris, rips it up on the four-string, while the guitar work is probably at the albums peek as well. Lots of woah-ah-ooooh’s are found here. The albums theme is empowering and inspiring others and it is shown here again.

Sincere Engineer - Hurricane of Misery

To understand Sincere Engineer, it helps to know where the name comes from. Legend has it the phrase was uttered by a member of The Lawrence Arms in an early 2000s interview, and it caught the attention of a young Deanna Belos who would later become a singer/songwriter. First used as her Twitter handle, it made sense to retain the moniker when picking a name for her solo project – so while technically still being a sole endeavour, after building a reputation on the Chicago punk scene Sincere Engineer has become far more than one person with an acoustic guitar. When playing live Belos is often joined by a three-piece band, and that arrangement defines the sound of her studio output and the newest record ‘Bless My Psyche’.

From this I am going with Hurricane of Misery. A blast of drums and beaming guitars, feeling wide and bright with its crashing cymbals and ringing guitars while having fun with its refrain of “I want to touch you with my mouth, I want to drink ‘til I pass out” it's an early standout for me.

Amyl And The Sniffers - Knifey

Amyl And The Sniffers are Amy Taylor (vocals), Bryce Wilson (drums), Declan Martens (guitar) & Fergus Romer (bass). They're from Melbourne and over the last few years they've become one of the punk scene's hottest tickets.

They've just released a new album titled Comfort To Me. The album is virtually non stop, high energy punk rock throughout but the song I'm featuring is one of the more restrained offerings. At least musically. Lyric wise it's one of the most powerful. It deals with the fear and vulnerability felt by women (although I suppose it could be a fear felt by anyone) who have to walk home alone, especially as it's getting dark and there's not really many other people around. This is Knifey.

The Chats - Holier Than Thou

Sunshine Coast trio The Chats have just finished recording a new record (which they say sounds shit hot). It's definitely a release I'm looking forward to.

Whilst we wait, I'm posting a new song by them. No idea if it'll be on the new record but it is on an album titled The Metallica Blacklist. If you fancy the idea of 53 artists covering the 12 tracks from Metallica's S/T album (aka The Black Album) then you're in for a treat.:

All profits will be donated to the contributing artists' charity of choice with The Chats choosing Metallica’s All Within My Hands Foundation and The North Australian Aboriginal Justice Agency.

Victims Of Bayswater Bridge - Sleeping In My Car

Victims Of Bayswater Bridge are from Perth and feature a line up of  AJ Winter (rhythm guitar/vocals), Amber Baldock (drums), Adam Brown (lead guitar) & Zack Yack (bass). They describe themselves as a malcontent mob of flea-ridden punks shredding on rocknroll earworms with reckless abandon.

They've a new single which you can get on cassette. A track from it is on Bandcamp now and it's really rather excellent. It's "written about arrogant abusing toxic male bogan cunce AJ used to serve at cashies armadale in the buys and loans room, that'd act completely superior whilst being completely on their ass relying on you to buy their worthless garbage." It's a wonderfully shambolic delight so check it out.

The Bollweevils - Black Hole in My Mind

The Bollweevils come from from Chicago, Illinois and they are a band I probably became aware of through Off With Their Heads. They have been around since 1989 and have racked up a pretty impressive back catalogue of songs that could be tagged as pop punk but skirt nearer the punk end of the spectrum than the pop end.

In line with playing at Riot Fest and The Fest in the near future, they've also released a new single. It's titled Liniment And Tonic, it's their first new material for 6 years and it's available via Red Scare Industries.

Whilst the title track is an ode to Daryl's day job, the flip makes a very decent fist of covering a classic from Death By Television by The Lillingtons. This is Black Hole In My Mind...

Neon Belly - The Boys Are Alright

Neon Belly are from Wilmington, North Carolina and feature a line up of Lacie Jay (vocals), PMAttitude (guitar/bass) & Nice Derek (drums/production). They've just released a Self Titled 5 track ep which is available on Bandcamp as a name your price download and on 7" vinyl from Fort Lowell Records. It's a fundraiser release, 100% of the sales from this record will be used to provide School Supplies & Hygiene Products in New Hanover County as part of a charity drive managed by Wanda's Creative Hair Salon.

Their sound is straight up shouty, enthusiastic punk. Female vocals, rough and ready production all performed with great gusto.  This is the lead track and it's called The Boys Are Alright...

Joy Orbison - better (w/ léa sen)

For anyone into the obscurer end of electronica the new album from Joy Orbison is really good, in my opinion. Titled Still Slipping vol. 1, it's a beautiful, versatile and mesmerising mixtape type of album.

I'm going with Better that features Léa Sen on vocals, has a top line of exquisite tenderness and melancholic house is one way I saw it described. I keep listening to tracks like this and saying it's "not my usual thing, but I think I need to reassess this statement these days as I am finding myself listening to it more and more, especially as background music when working or reading and so on.

Teenage Bottlerocket - Strung out on Stress

TBR are a Wyoming based skate punk type punk band. They can sometimes sound a bit samey but always deliver with some fast based punk rock. Last Friday they released their ninth record called Sick Sesh. I am sharing Strung Out on Stress which is an early stand out on the album for me. It has the the fast paced music, the catchy guitar and vocals.

The Rolling Stones - I Got The Blues

Last month saw the passing of Charlie Watts and I thought it was only right to share one of my favourite Rolling Stones tracks in dedication. RIP Charlie.

Halsey - The Lighthouse

Halsey's plays "gritty, dark electro-pop" and it isn't something I would normally listen to. However, her latest release, If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power is produced by Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross and their fingerprints are all over the album. The Lighthouse is a great example of this and has a feel of the Shirley Manson's about it as well. It's an early standout for me on an album that has a bit of everything, some more to my taste than others, but needed to check out when I saw Trent & Atticus were on production duties.

The Bronx - Peace Pipe

LA punkers The Bronx released their sixth album (titled, erm, VI) at the end of August and it has a lot of the same old punk rock that their last 5 have had but are moving a bit more towards some classic rock as well. Some great lyrics, some great drumming also, it is fast and furious with some great guitar solos too. Of course, after saying this I have gone with the reprieve of Peace Pipe where they take a break from the heavier musical assault throughout. This one focuses more on melody and form and even has a catchy chorus and some sing-a-long “whoahs” for good measure which often isn't seen from The Bronx. It’s a song about breaking out of the monotony of life, taking risks, and just living.

The Battery Farm - Roy Keane Isn't Real

Manchester "gutter punk" 4 piece The Battery Farm have been putting together a killer back catalogue of great music and will shortly be adding to that impressive collection with the release of a new ep. It'll be titled Dirty Den's March Of Suffering and it's going to be released on October 15th by Blindside Records.

To give us an idea of what to expect, they've teased us with a track from it, it's titled Roy Keane Isnt Real and it's a vibrant 2 minute outpouring of the kind of contemporary punk that's helping to keep our favourite genre fresh and exciting.

Blemish - You Look Like A Cop

Blemish are Gustavo, Katia, Lisa & Rick and they've just released a 7 track cassette on Tunisian label A World Divided.

I don't know anything about them but to me they have an early 80's UK punk sound and mix in some darkly gothic undertones.

This is You Look Like A Cop...

The Dissidents - No Air

The Dissidents are a new 4 piece from Philadelphia who feature a line up comprising of members of bands such as The Brood, Mischief Brew, Witch Hunt, The Pist, Aus-Rotten, & Bong Daemon; Janine St Clair (bass & vocals), Rachel Courtney (vocals), Bill Chamberlain (guitar) and Shawn St Clair (drums).

The released a a rough and ready digital demo that boasts 5 tracks of pissed off punk which rage against the boys in blue ("all cops are culpable"), the treatment of immigrants ("crime against humanity"), unlawful killing by those in authority ("just another racist murder") etc. Hopefully just an introduction to a band we'll hear more from, you can find it on Bandcamp and this is the lead track. It's called No Air

L.A. EXES - Skinny Dipping

L.A. Exes are from, erm, Los Angeles and line up with Steph Barker (drums), Jenny Owens Young (vocals/guitar), Sam Barbera (vocals/bass), and Rachel White (guitar).

After releasing debut single, Temporary Goodbye, in February, they've drip fed a bunch of songs in the run up to the release of debut album Get Some. If 60's influenced indie pop with just that bit of an edge and plenty of melody is your thing then I think you'll be a fan.

A nice, catchy track this is Skinny Dipping.

Inside Out - Burning Fight

Inside Out was a hardcore punk band from Orange County, California. It was fronted by Zack de la Rocha, later of Rage Against the Machine.

Their only release before their breakup in 1991 was a 7" EP titled No Spiritual Surrender. After the band broke up, it was released on CD with two additional tracks that were from the same recording session, but did not fit on the 7".

I am sharing the opening track which is titled Burning Fight.

Pablo Matisse - I Will Follow You Into the Dark

Pablo Matisse are a punk band from Gothenburg, Sweden. Their latest release was Human Warmth, a 5 track EP that was released back in November 2019. The EP includes a great cover of the Death Cab For Cutie track I Will Follow You into the Dark. This is the track I am sharing today.

Sex Tape - Dennis Rodman

Sex Tape are a quartet from Berlin who are trying to create a new and unconventional sound that pays homage to the records they have in their record collections. Think angry 90's post hardcore with snotty vocals, noisy guitars and driving drums & basslines.

They released a single last year titled Nasal Spray and have just followed it up with a Demo cassette. 3 new songs "tributing Dennis Rodman, liftboys and truthtelling" with the addition of the songs from the single on the flip side. For those who don't follow American sports, Dennis Rodman is a former professional basketball player. His retirement from the sport was followed by numerous tv appearances and a couple of action movies.

There's lots of interesting things going on on this track, I think you'll like it. It's called Dennis Rodman...
