The Explosion always felt like they were unfortunate enough to be the right band at the wrong time. They were crafting catchy pop-punk gems years before Black Tape was released in 2004 but always to minimal critical acclaim or commercial success. Instantly gratifying hooks and incessant, driving riffs are a given when it comes to what expect from them and Black Tape is full of anthemic choruses that teenagers the underground world over flocked to pump fists to, but their time had passed them by with other pop punk bands making their mark before they had chance to be noticed and it was a real shame that they didn't hit the wider audience they deserved. I saw them a couple of times supporting the likes of Hot Water Music and The Bronx and never disappointed.
I am sharing the first single from Black Tape, Here I Am which featured in the soundtracks of the Burnout 3, Tony Hawk's Underground 2, and the Cars video game as an instrumental. It is a nice little punk song that brings back lots of memories for me.
