Sincere Engineer - Overbite

Sincere Engineer is the name that Chicago native Deanna Belos goes by when she’s armed with an acoustic guitar and writing and playing songs. In 2017 she teamed up with a full band for her debut album, Rhombithian, which was released by Red Scare Industries. With fans from Brendan Kelly of The Lawrence Arms to Ryan Young of Off With Their Heads / Anxious & Angry and support slots for Alkaline Trio, they have fans in good places.

The track I am sharing today is Overbite which is probably one of my favourite tracks on the whole album. The song is about how Deanna was, or is even, smart enough to have been a dentist but she knew that it just wasn’t right for her. She could have tried harder but it was not what she wanted. My favourite bit is definitely the faster paced and infectious chorus – which seems far more cheery than it actually is. ‘I don’t care about anything as much as I used to, I don’t care about anything as much as I used to.’ and also to the same tune ‘I still feel just about as dumb as I used to, I still feel just about as dumb as I used to.’

Rhombithian is excellent and has that DIY raw feel to it that I love about this type of punk music. No frills just great lyrics and music because they want to.
